1. Eleanor’s Secret

Perfect for young children!

A young boy, Nat, goes on an adventure aided by the denizens of a magic library where the characters from classic children’s books come alive.

Starring Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Puss in Boots, Peter Pan and more.

2. A Letter to Momo

A funny, sweet film from the creators of Ghost in the Shell.

Momo has lost her dad, and all she has to remember him by is an unfinished letter that reads “Dear Momo” and nothing more.

She feels lost and alone but, with the help of three supernatural monsters living in her attic, she can find out what her father was trying to tell her.

If you’re a fan of Japanese animation, you’ll also like Patema Inverted and Welcome to the Space Show.

3. Sita Sings the Blues

Director Nina Paley single-handedly animates a film that finds the connections between the Indian epic Ramayana, jazz singer Annette Hanshaw’s, and her own divorce.

She blends them all into the Greatest Breakup Story Ever Told.

4. Kirikou and the Sorceress

The best and best-known film from French animation legend Michel Ocelot.

It recounts the tale of tiny Kirikou born in an African village in which Karaba the Sorceress has placed a terrible curse. Kirikou sets out on a quest to free his village of the curse and find out the secret of why Karaba is so wicked.

5. Chico & Rita

An Academy-Award nominated film that celebrates music and Cuban culture with an intoxicating cocktail of love, passion, and heartbreak.

Chico is a young pianist; Rita, a spectacular singer. Music and desire unite them as they chase their dreams and each other from Havana to New York to Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas.

6. Approved for Adoption

This award-winning animated documentary traces the upbringing of filmmaker Jung Henin, a Korean child adopted by a western family after the end of the Korean War.

Animated vignettes track Jung from the day that he meets his blond siblings, through elementary school, and into his teenage years, when his emerging sense of identity begins to create fissures at home and ignite the latent biases of his adoptive parents.

7. Wrinkles

The resident conman at a retirement gets a new roommate, a former bank manager who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The two learn that you’re never too old to let someone change your life.

Wrinkles moves freely between the inmates’ daily routines and their more colorful, dementia-induced fantasies, leaving plenty of room for tears and laughter.

8. Millenium Actress

Satoshi Kon, once again, bends space, time and reality to tell the story of a once famous, now forgotten actress.

9. The Kingdom of Dreams & Madness: A Year with the Brilliant Minds at Studio Ghibli

Not an animated film, but a must-watch for fans of animation.

Granted unfettered access to the legendary and notoriously insular Studio Ghibli, this documentary follows the three men who are the lifeblood of Ghibli — producer Toshio Suzuki, and directors Isao Takahata, and Hayao Miyazaki — over the course of a year as the studio rushes to complete two films, Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Takahata’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya.
