Catch the Hatch!

By |2024-03-12T15:35:18-04:00March 22, 2024|

Starting Monday, March 25, we’ll have special guests – chicken eggs that are getting ready to hatch – in the children’s department at our Main Branch. We’ll have an incubator set up and families may even get to see the eggs as they hatch.

They’re expected to hatch in April. Once the eggs are almost ready, you ‘ll be able to watch the Hatch Cam on our Twitch channel. After hatching, the chicks will live at our Main Branch for a week before heading onto their forever home.

Additionally, families can learn all about chicks and eggs during a program we’re hosting with Jess Nestor from Meyer Hatchery at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at our Main Branch. Nestor will talk about the process of chicken egg hatching and answer any questions kids may have. She may also have some chicks of her own with her. Registration is required. Sign up online or by calling us at (440) 255-8811 ext. 3.

Young readers can get a helping paw at Mentor Public Library

By |2024-03-25T10:39:41-04:00March 21, 2024|

We have a program that encourages young readers by letting them borrow a furry friend to read with!

Paws to Read pairs children with trained therapy dogs. The pups make an ideal audience—supportive, adorable and happy to listen to the reader—and all they ask for in return is the occasional belly rub. Paws to Read is open to any kids who can read independently.

We’re hosting Paws to Read sessions at 6 and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at our Headlands Branch.

Each child gets 30 minutes to read with their therapy dog. Registration is required, and we have a finite number of therapy dogs volunteering; so, unfortunately, there’s a limit on how many kids can participate. Call us to sign up now at (440) 257-2000.

We’re Hosting a Trio of Gardening Programs this April

By |2024-03-13T15:00:09-04:00March 20, 2024|

All gardeners — from greenhorns to green thumbs — can enjoy a trio of three free gardening programs this April at our Main Branch.

First, Mel Hauser from Good Nature Organic Lawn Care will offer practical tips and easy steps for taking care of a lawn and landscape without using harmful chemicals and pesticides. The program will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2. All who attend will have a chance to win the book, A Beautiful Lawn Organically, written by Good Nature Organic Lawn Care’s founder Alec McClennan.

Next, the Lake County Master Gardeners will offer their expertise on how to wake up a garden this spring at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6. This free class will provide an overview on garden cleanup, composting, pruning, fertilizing, soil testing and pest control.

Then, a Lake County Master Gardener will explain the winter-sowing technique and provide a hands-on demonstration at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13. Dress for gardening as you’ll be planting seeds at the end of the presentation. Also, bring a clean, empty milk jug.

Due to limited space, registration is required for all three programs. Sign up at the hyperlinks above or by calling us at 440-255-8811 ext. 1.

You can visit our YouTube channel for more gardening and horticulture programs.

Two more tips for any gardeners out there:

  1. Did you know that you can get free veggie, flower, and herb seeds from our Seed Library? Check out our collection  the next time you visit our Main Branch. Borrow up to 15 packets of seeds per season.
  2. You should also check out the special collection from Holden Forests & Gardens’ Corning Library available at our Main Branch. In addition to a gorgeous arboretum in Kirtland, Holden also has a spectacular collection of gardening, horticulture, environmental and botany books at Corning Library within its arboretum. Dozens of Corning Library’s books are now available to borrow at our Main Branch. Thanks to a partnership between libraries, you can use your cards to check out books from this special collection. Our typical lending rules apply.
