Getting abstract with Studio MPL

As abstraction practice, Maria draws a face in the style of painter Joan Miró with one twist. The shape of the eyes, nose and other facial features are decided by a roll of the dice.

Studio MPL—Mentor Public Library’s art club for kids—got abstract during its meeting this week.

First, they learned about the life of Pablo Picasso. (His first word was “pencil!” His full name is 23 words long!) Then they practiced some of his abstraction techniques and used them to draw self-portraits.

Every month, the kids take on a new art project. They’ve sketched live artistscreated imaginary friendsmade sun catcherspainted sunsetsweaved, tried out pointillism and even garnered inspiration from Jackson Pollock.

Studio MPL meets on the third Monday of each month. If your kid likes art—any kind of art—they can join the fun!

Next month’s session—the last before its summer hiatus—will be May 16.

Kids can sign up for Studio MPL on our website or by calling the library at 440-255-8811 ext. 221.
