Make a scary video for our Know Poe Video Contest
As part of our Know Poe event month, we’re holding a scary video contest.
People can work individually or as a group to make a short, scary video (no longer than five minutes.) Videos will be judged on creativity, scariness, execution and Poe-tency. “Poe-tency” specifically refers to how Poe’s stories and ideas get incorporated into the video.
(As you probably noticed, our promotional video isn’t very scary and it barely mentions Poe. So we’re hoping that you’re better at this than us.)
Everyone who participates in the contest will get a Know Poe T-shirt from Mentor Public Library and a chance to see their video on the big screen at the Great Lakes Mall Atlas Cinemas during the Know Poe Film Festival in July.
Adults can participate in the contest. However, those older than the age of 18 are not eligible for prizes. (Teams will compete in categories based upon age. They can be all 18 and younger, 19 or older, or have both minors and adults. However, if that team wins the contest, only the kids will receive prizes.)
And the prizes? Winners get Poe-themed swag, including action figures, lunch boxes and, yes, books.
But the real prize will be seeing something you and your team made on the cinematic screen.
For those who wish to participate, contact the Mentor Public Library at email@example.com or call 255-8811 x215. The deadline to submit a video is July 1.
Fine Print: We want to play as many contest entries on the big screen as possible. However, if we receive too many entries to conceivably play them all, preference will be given to videos that were submitted to the contest first.
Also, we at the library do reserve the right to not play a submitted video at the Know Poe Film Festival. To be clear, we don’t want to prevent anyone from participating. We want everyone to see you for the cinematic geniuses you are. We want your videos to be scary and creative and awesome. However, the Film Festival is ultimately a family event and we don’t want to traumatize anyone. (We will make it clear in the promotion for the film festival that some images and sequences may not be appropriate for all ages.)
Finally, submitting your video to our video contest in no way gives us ownership of it. You still own it. If you want to submit your video to Sundance when you’re finished with us, we’re fine with that.
Know Poe Film Festival at Atlas Cinemas
Edgar Allan Poe may have not lived to see his work on the biggest of screens, but he had an enormous influence on director Roger Corman and actor Vincent Price.
Library patrons can come see four of their classics, as well as Know Poe video contest entries, at the Great Lakes Mall Atlas Cinemas. (Some images and sequences may not be appropriate for all ages.)
The film festival is underwritten by the Mentor Community Arts Commission.
The showing times are:
- Thursday, July 3, 7:00 p.m. The Pit and the Pendulum
- Thursday, July 10, 7:00 p.m. The Raven
- Thursday, July 17, 7:00 p.m. Tales of Terror
- Thursday, July 24, 7:00 p.m. The Masque of the Red Death
