Mentor Library starting historical fiction & Sherlock Holmes book clubs

Read “A Study in Scarlet” with Sherlocked, our brand-new book club for fans of Sherlock Holmes.

We’re starting two new book clubs – for fans of Sherlock Holmes and historical fiction, respectively – this year at our newest location, The HUB in Mentor High School.

Stories of the Past Book Club reads the best and most popular historical fiction novels out there. It meets at 6 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at The HUB. Its first meeting will be Jan. 14 and readers will discuss The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer. Scintillating discussion, light snacks and refreshments will all be provided.

In future months, the book club will travel to antebellum Virginia with Tara Conklin’s The House Girl and the last days of the Qing Dynasty with Anchee Min’s Pearl of China.

Meanwhile, fans of Basil Street’s sleuth will love Sherlocked, the library’s new book club dedicated to the adventures of Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson. Readers can confer about a different one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories at 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at The HUB.

The first meeting will be Jan. 16 and the book club will chat about A Study in Scarlet, Holmes’ and Watson’s literary debut.

Books for both clubs are available at The HUB and our Main Branch.

By the way, yes, we have a new location inside of Mentor High School. Its renovated library — now called The Hub — is open to everyone for study, quiet tutoring and more from 3 to 8 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It also hosts a wide variety of programs.

Furthermore, The HUB features a state-of-the-art makerspace with a large-format printer, vinyl cutter, T-shirt press, laser engraver and more that is open to the public. For more information, visit our makerspace page.
