The young artists of Studio MPL, our art club for kids, learned that there’s more than one way to draw a face earlier this month.

They looked at portraits by artists as different as Caravaggio, Frida Kahlo, Rene Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Yayoi Kusama, and Andy Warhol. Then they drew their own portraits, cobbling aspects of the famous faces.

For example, some had Medusa’s hair, Mona Lisa’s smile, a pearl earring, and an apple for a nose.

Then, the artists challenged themselves by making faces out of pool noodles.

And some of the faces got pretty wild.

We have two art clubs for kids: Studio MPL (for third through sixth graders) and Studio MPL Jr. (kindergarten through second grade.)

Every month, the kids in our art clubs take on a new art project. They’ve sketched live modelscreated imaginary friendsmade sun catcherspainted sunsetsweavedtried out pointillism and even garnered inspiration from Jackson Pollock.

The clubs will be on hiatus during Summer Reading but they’ll return in September.
