STEAM: The Sweet Science

Kids got a taste of how sweet science can be during the first program in our STEAM series on Tuesday.

They learned about densities and chemical reactions, and they got to use candy in their experiments.

First, kids tested the densities of different candies—mints, Starbursts, marshmallows and more—by seeing if they floated in water.

Then, kids learned about chemical reactions. They combined vinegar, baking soda, and gummy worms in a cup of water. The vinegar and baking soda reacted chemically, creating carbon dioxide. And the gas bubbles made the gummy worms dance!

Our STEAM series continues next week. Each week, we’ll focus on a different aspect of STEAM. The upcoming sessions are:

Each of these sessions begin at 4 p.m. at our Main Branch.

They are free and open to all kids in first through fifth grade. However, registration is required. Parents must sign up their child for each session separately. Registration begins two weeks before each respective session.

To sign up or for more information, call the library at (440) 255-8811 ext. 221.
