By |2021-06-19T06:00:41-04:00June 19, 2021|

Victory Gardens made a resurgence during the COVID pandemic but what do you know about their history? Why did they become popular during both World Wars? Our Librarian Cailey interviews food historian Sarah Wassberg Johnson to learn that and more!

Wassberg Johnson is an author, speaker and educator on all topics related to food history. She’s been featured in The Atlantic, CNN and The History Channel miniseries, “The Food That Built America.”

One more tip for any gardening enthusiasts: Did you know that you can get free veggie, flower, and herb seeds from our Seed Library? Check out our collection  the next time you visit our Main Branch. Borrow up to 15 packets of seeds per season.

Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War: Ex Parte Milligan

By |2021-06-14T19:00:30-04:00June 14, 2021|

Most of the action from this month’s Civil War talk happens in the courtroom and not on the battlefield!

When a military tribunal sentenced Lambdin P. Milligan of Indiana to hang for allegedly aiding the rebellious states, his lawyers—including James A. Garfield—stood before the Supreme Court to preserve not only his life but also Reconstruction.

Our speaker is Ranger Chris Dobeck from the James A. Garfield National Historic Site.

Our Civil War series continues next month at noon on Wednesday, July 14. The rangers will discuss the history of the US Navy from wooden ships to the “Steel Navy.” For the first time in more than a year, we will be meeting in person at our Main Branch! We look forward to seeing you here. Registration is required, and you can sign up on our website.

Finally, if you’re interested in Civil War history, several talks in our series can be viewed online in their entirety, including:

All Booked Up with Cailey & Meg: Perfect YA Summer Reads

By |2021-06-12T12:00:43-04:00June 12, 2021|

Looking for a beautiful beach read? Cailey and Meg recommend four of their favorite YA summer reads, including:

  1. Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean
  2. Girls Save the World in this One by Ash Parsons
  3. The Cost of Knowing by Brittney Morris
  4. A Taste for Love by Jennifer Yen

And, yes, one of them is a twist on Pride & Prejudice, because Jane Austen is an author for all seasons.

Most of the books they discuss can also be borrowed as ebooks using OverDrive or Libby. All you need is your Mentor Public Library card
