On October 21, the Mentor Public Library Board of Trustees voted to seek quotes on the cost to demolish the Read House building, which is next door to MPL’s Main Branch and owned by the library. Its address is 8245 Mentor Ave.
Taking this step doesn’t mean that the Read House building is definitely going to be demolished. The Board has not yet decided what to do with the building. But part of the Board’s decision-making process is gathering all the necessary information, and that includes the price of a potential demolition.
The Read House – the building specifically, not the property on which it stands – has been available for purchase for more than a year. (It is still available for purchase, and those who are interested can call the library at 440-255-8811 ext. 213.) However, the library hasn’t received any offers.
As per bids, any quotes from Demolition Firms should include the price for the following:
- Complete removal of the house from the property. This includes demolition of the structure, disconnecting and removing any utilities, and disposal and removal from the property of all materials.
- Backfilling of the basement.
- Any required abatement. Previous evaluation has shown there is asbestos and lead paint throughout the structure.
- Work should maintain/preserve the rhododendron bushes in front of the structure.
The Library reserves the right to salvage and/or sell any items and materials in and on the structure prior to demolition.
Quotes should include detailed pricing based on the above along with any additional items of note. Quotes should also contain a list of 3 references and may be submitted to Cheryl Kuonen, Director of the Mentor Public Library, at email@example.com or by mail to the Mentor Public Library, 8215 Mentor Ave, Mentor, OH, 44060. The deadline to submit is Nov. 30, 2020. All contractors should be aware that competitive bidding will be required in the event the total cost to perform this work exceeds $50,000.
