Changes coming when we reopen Main & Headlands branches on June 8

Mentor Public Library has begun the next step of our gradual reopening with the reopening of our Main and Headlands Branches to the public.

We have made some changes to provide as many services as we can while still keeping you safe as possible, including:

image001New Hours

Our hours will be different. Both Headlands and Main Branches will close periodically throughout the day to allow staff time to  thoroughly clean the buildings.

During these times when the buildings are closed to the public, people will still be able to pick up items from the drive-thru at Main and curbside at Headlands.

Our Lake Branch will remain closed while the building receives a renovation and expansion that was planned before the COVID-19 pandemic began and is funded in large part by a generous donation from former library trustee Francis “Bud” Paulson. However, while it is closed to the public, you can still pick up books, movies and other items curbside from the Lake Branch.

Our branch at The HUB will remain closed while Mentor High School is closed to the public.

Summer Reading

Imagine Your Story with Summer Reading at Mentor Public Library. Win prizes by reading and having fun this summer.

Imagine Your Story with Summer Reading at Mentor Public Library. Win prizes by reading and having fun this summer.

We are hosting our annual Summer Reading program, though it will look a little different from previous years. This summer’s theme is Imagine Your Story and it’s all about fairy tales, folk tales, and mythology.

It will run from June 15 to July 31.

People of all ages can participate by downloading a bingo card right here. There are two separate bingo cards:

The cards for teens and adults are the same, but they will receive separate prizes.

The bingo cards are filled with fun ideas that people can do on their own or with their family. Most of the ideas involve reading but a few encourage other ways to have fun like visiting a local park.

Whenever you complete a bingo, bring your card to the library and you’ll receive a ticket for a chance to win one of our prizes. (You can do this curbside at MPL’s Lake and Headlands Branches or at the drive-thru in the Main Branch, if you’d rather not come into the branch.)

The rules are a little different for kids and the teen/adult summer reading programs. For kids, you can earn up to 12 tickets if you complete every task (and, consequently, every bingo) on the card.

For teens and adults, you can also earn a raffle ticket when you:

  • Complete the tasks in all four corners of the bingo card
  • Return your card to the library.

Finally, any teens and adults will receive a ticket for a bonus raffle if they complete four or more bingos. Adult and teens can complete up to two Summer Reading bingo sheets to earn tickets.

Capacity Limits & Safety Measures

Mentor Public Library is trying to balance both service and safety while reopening. We want to offer as many services as we can while still keeping you safe as possible. To that end, there will be a limit to how many people can be in the Main and Headlands Branches at one time when they reopen. Capacity is 50 people at Main and five at the significantly smaller Headlands Branch and we ask that social distancing be maintained at all times.

Many of our seating areas have been modified or removed. This is to encourage the “browse and go” model so that as many people as possible can use the library.

Our staff has also taken additional steps to protect your health. We have installed screen shields at key locations. This is for your protection. We ask that you respect the shield and do not try to reach or talk around it.

We will be cleaning common surfaces more frequently and wearing masks. To help protect the health and safety of all, visitors are asked to wear a face covering while in the library. However, if a patron chooses not to wear a mask, then our staff members may ask them to stand behind a screen shield before they receive individual assistance.

Limited Computer Use

Computer use is limited to two hours per patron. Additionally, computers have been spaced to preserve social distancing and will be sanitized between each use.  At Headlands Branch, where fewer computers are available, patrons are encouraged to register for computer use in advance. You can sign up by calling the branch.

Online Story Times, Author Talks, Book Clubs & More

It may be awhile before we can once again host story times and programs in our branches. But we’re already hosting programs again online. You can enjoy story times every week day on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

The library is also hosting online book clubs, author talks, and more special programs via Zoom. For more information and to register for these programs, visit our online event calendar.

Circulation

You can still get items curbside at our Headlands and Lake Branch or from the drive-thru at the Main Branch. Hundreds of thousands of books, movies, albums, video games, and more are available for lending.

You can also get grab-and-go crafts, hotspots, ukuleles, cake pans, and traffic cones, as well as flower, veggie, and herb seeds from our seed library.
