Discover the ghosts & legends of Northern Ohio with William G. Krejci

By |2020-03-14T06:00:55-04:00March 14, 2020|

Author William G. Krejci has written about the lost cemeteries of Cuyahoga County and purported hauntings at Put-In-Pay and Franklin Castle. His newest book, The Ghosts and Legends of Northern Ohio, takes you through Rider’s Inn in Painesville, demolished orphanages in Vermillion, and haunted graveyards in Columbiana County.

Krejci discussed his book and what he discovered while researching it when he visited our library earlier this month. He also told us why he started investigating local haunts.

Finally, he suggested some other books on the same topic. So if you enjoy The Ghosts and Legends of Northern Ohio, check out:

Celebrating Day of the Dead with art

The young artists of our Masterpieces at Main art club filled our story-time room with brightly colored skulls last month.

They weren’t being macabre. Instead, the kids were making artwork inspired by Dia de los Muertos. The holiday is an opportunity for families in Mexico and parts of Central America to get together, celebrate, and remember loved ones who have passed on.

The kids got in the spirit by painting alfeñique skulls, decorating sugar cookies, and even coloring marshmallows with edible gels—all with bold and bright colors.

By the way, our Masterpieces at Main Art Club is always happy to welcome new members. It’s open to all kids (eight to 12 years old.) And you don’t need to paint like Picasso or sculpt like Michelangelo to participate. However, to get the most out of the club, the kids will need to be able to work independently. Also, art can get messy, so dress appropriately.

We’re taking a brief hiatus for the holidays, but we’ll be back in January.

In the meantime, art lovers have other clubs they can check out at the library:

  • Teens and tweens can make melted crayon art at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at The HUB. Create a unique piece of artwork using crayons and a hair dryer. Register to attend online or call The HUB at (440) 205-6011.
  • Studio MPL is now at the Lake Branch! Kids gather each month to make a fun art project. The next meeting is 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16.
  • Kids aren’t the only ones who can get creative. Adults can join us for our Crafty Adults Club at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at our Lake Branch or our Bad Art Club at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at our Headlands Branch. Both are free to join. We provide the supplies. You just bring your imagination.
  • Finally, if you love art, then you should check our Book & Brush Club. Our Collection Development Manager Barb provides  a visual presentation based on the lives of artists and associated art movements from the club’s book of the month. Like our Masterpieces at Main Art Club, Book & Brush will also return in 2020.

We moved, grooved, shimmied, and shook at our Preschool Dance Party on Monday.

Kids donned their costumes a few days early to dance, make a monster mask, and enjoy a bit of story time.

We’ve had a month full of Halloween fun at the library, and it’s almost over. But you can still search for specters during the Ghostbusters Scavenger Hunt at our Lake Branch and trick or treat at the library on Halloween.

Pumpkin Decorating at the Library

By |2019-10-21T06:00:12-04:00October 21, 2019|

No carving necessary when you have creativity.

No carving necessary when you have creativity.

Kids used paint, stickers, glue, and even feathers to decorate pumpkins this week at our Lake Branch. A whole lot of creativity, and no carving necessary.

If you missed the fun, families can decorate pumpkins together from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at our Headlands Branch. This is a walk-in craft, while supplies last. No registration required.

By the way, we love Halloween and have spooky programs for kids at all of our branches. You can peruse them on our event calendar and see which ones that you want to attend. Some of our favorites include:

  • Families can get in the Halloween spirit with spooky stories by the campfire at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, outside of our Lake Branch. We’ll also have crafts, treats and a pumpkin-toss game.
  • Tweens can munch on mystery candy and try guessing what it is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at our Headlands Branch.
  • Kids (ages two to six) can move and groove during our Preschool Dance Party at on Monday, Oct. 28, at our Main Branch. Registration required. Don’t forget your costume!

Of course, you can also search for specters all month long during the Ghostbusters Scavenger Hunt at our Lake Branch and trick or treat at the library on Halloween.
